IMPORTANT NOTICE:
The situation I found
myself in with my five cats was beyond my control and if I had the
choice I would not have put them in this situation. I would not
recommend it to anyone and would give the warning that there is the
possibility of losing your cats in such a situation. Indeed, I met a
young mother at a campsite who had taken her cat along with her and
the kids to see her parents farm. On seeing a large cow the cat ran
off in fright and they were not able to locate her after days of
searching. It is also incredibly stressful as you are constantly
worrying about the safety of your cats.
In 2015 my five cat
children and I found ourselves travelling around the country in a
caravan looking for a home to buy where we would no longer be
harassed by awful humans. I had hoped to find a place within a couple
of weeks. Unfortunately, thanks largely to government policy and
greedy real estate agents, the cost of owning one of the necessities
in life, a home, has become exorbitant in Australia. Thus it ended up
being five months.
The first fortnight
was like being trapped in a space ship with my five cats. I was
terrified of letting them out of the caravan in case they floated off
and disappeared into space, to continue the metaphor. I finally
relented to their demands and allowed them out for some well deserved
fresh air and stretch of their legs. I soon discovered that they were
reticent to stray too far from the caravan or myself.
My next discovery was
their ability to stick together like a pride of lions as we went for
short hikes in the morning and afternoon at our campsites. They had
an absolutely fabulous time exploring the world. I've created this
blog as a photographic log of our five month trek and of our
continuing hiking adventures at our new home in a mountain
wilderness.
